Among the many things the 2020 BMW X3 SUV does very well is that it reminds us that “compact” doesn’t have to mean “cramped.” As it arrives at BMW of El Cajon for a new model year, it offers something new: a hefty dose of power to go with your elbow room. And there’s space left over for some other surprises, too.
2020 BMW 4 Series Details
- 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4
- 248hp / 258 lb-ft torque
- Eight-speed automatic transmission
- RWD or xDrive AWD
Two years on from a full redesign, the new BMW X3 turns its attention squarely to performance. There’s a new BMW M Series variant, the BMW X3 M, which serves up standard xDrive AWD powered by a twin-turbocharged 473 horsepower I6 engine – unless you’d prefer to punish the asphalt with the 503 horsepower of the Competition variant. But even the rear-wheel-drive sDrive30i model, which is one of the sole RWD models in its segment, performs admirably.
In addition to some changes to the available option packages (which your San Diego-area BMW dealer will discuss with you), the BMW X3 also adds a cornering feature to its new LED headlights. Also on tap: 28.7 to 62.7 cubic feet of cargo space, and a healthy 4,400-pound maximum towing capacity.
2020 BMW 4 Series Safety and Special Features
The 2020 BMW X3 repeats last year’s NHTSA five-star safety rating. The IIHS hasn’t rated it yet, but it’s worth noting that it earned the Top Safety Pick Plus rating last time out. That’s thanks in no small part to the Active Guard safety group (forward collision warning, park distance control, AEB, and collision mitigation braking), all of which are standard.
Speaking of standard features, the list gets a bit longer this year with the addition of navigation to the iDrive infotainment system. Other features of note include Apple CarPlay® (free for the first year, subscription-based thereafter), three-zone climate control, and options like a Wi-Fi hotspot and Harman / Kardon sound system.
- Active Guard
- Apple CarPlay by subscription
- Optional Wi-Fi hotspot
- Available Harmon / Kardon sound system
