Each trim features a powertrain specific to it, with the 2016 BMW X5 35i models getting a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine and the BMW X5 xDrive35d getting a diesel-powered 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine. New for the 2016 model year is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 240 horsepower and comes paired to a 9-kilowatt-hour batter pack that combine to have an output of 308 horsepower. In testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it earned a five-star overall rating as well as a number of top safety features including BMW Assist, BMW Remote Services, a head-up display, blind spot monitoring and more!

Current Model Year: 2017 BMW X5

The 2017 BMW X5 remains one of the top picks for a competitive midsize luxury SUV. It offers strong performance, a luxurious and spacious cabin, and impressive powertrain options. The midsize luxury SUV is available in four trim levels: 35i, 35d, 40e, and 50i. All models have all-wheel drive with the exception of the 35i, which gets rear-wheel drive. The 2017 BMW X5 35i gets a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower, while the BMW X5 xDrive35d gets a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine that delivers 255 horsepower. The BMW X5 xDrive50i gets a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine that delivers 445 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque.
